Alzheimer`s disease and New antibiotics-By A.J. Tamhankar

Scientists from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have revealed that amyloids, known to be responsible for causing Alzheimers disease, have been found to play a critical role in urinary tract infections. Some of the infectious bacteria use amyloids to attach to host cells and to build biofilms, which are bacterial communities bound together in a film that helps resist antibiotics and immune attacks. During the study, the research team altered potential UTI-fighting compounds originally selected for their ability to block bacteria's ability to make amyloids and form biofilms. But when they brought the compounds back to UTI research after the neurology studies, they found the changes had also unexpectedly made them more effective UTI treatments. (From Andhra News)

Indo - Asian Antibiotic News 2009 - Dr.A.J.Tamhankar

-On 8th December, 2009, International aid agency Global Fund announced a $128.5 million grant for India to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Of the grants, $69.4 million will be provided for expanding care and treatment services for tuberculosis (TB), particularly for multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. India bears 21 percent of the global TB burden and has the highest estimated incidence of multi-drug resistant cases of any country. $38.1 million will go to malaria prevention and treatment efforts in the seven states in the northeast region - Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. This includes efforts to achieve near universal coverage of long-lasting insecticide treated nets by 2015 in these areas. $18.6 million will go to multi-country HIV grant in South Asia for an initiative targeting gays and the transgender community.
-The patent expiries of three blockbuster antibiotics —levofloxacin, moxifloxacin and piperacillin /tazobactam — in the near future may contribute to their cheaper availability in countries like India.

Occurrence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistant bacteria in hospital associated waters in India

A team of Indian scientists from R.D.Gardi Medical College, Ujjain and a Swedish scientist from Karolinska Institute recently presented preliminary findings of their collaborative study at the National Conference of IPHA, (Bangalore, 9-11 January 2009) and at the IAPSM Conference, (Aurangabad, 21-23 January 2009), in which they reported occurrence of Metronidazole, sulfamethoxazole, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, levofloxacin, tinidazole and ciprofloxacin in the range of 1.4 to 236.00 µg/L in the waste water of two Indian hospitals. E. coli isolates from the hospital waste water samples showed resistance to third generation cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones. The impact of such an occurrence on public health and environment of India needs to be evaluated.
The scientists will soon start communicating their results to Research Journals.

ABR gene in genetically engineered Brinjal

Dear friends
Dr. Mira Shiva informs that
A company in India is developing genetically engineered Brinjal incorporating the Bacillus thuringiesis gene.
The Antibiotic Resistant Marker being used for Bt Brinjal is NEOMYCIN . Horizontal transfer of genes & Genetic pollution & other Public Health Concerns need to be addressed as Biosafety studies done by the Company are inadequate. The GEAC Meets on 14th Jan 09.
All of you need to comment on this proposal in this space so that Dr. Mira Shiva takes it up at the appropriate forum.
